Innovation Results


Spirulina combination with FD vegetables in a savory soup formulation. Taste is similar to a blend of miso soup and garden vegetable. 

Stabilized FD allicin in garlic has positive anti-microbial effects. FD gingerol and shogaol have synergistic antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects which may speed up the metabolism of fats and inhibit enzymes in carbohydrate metabolism. The added potential synergistic effect of spirulina provides high levels of nutrition, anti-hypertensive, anti-cholesterol and improved blood glucose levels.

Pharmacokinetics

  

Spirulina has a high protein content (70%), contains many vitamins and minerals including B12, provitamin A, B-carotenes, iron, phenolic acids, tocopherols and linolenic acid. High energy levels result from its constituents. These include rhamnose, glycogen polysaccharides, and essential fats that are easily absorbed by human cells to assist in energy release (Karkos 2011). It also increases healthy lactobacillus in the intestine. Evidence suggests that the positive effects of spirulina on the immune system is related to its role in covering nutritional deficiencies (Karkos 2011).


Spirulina taken daily for two months at our recommended dose has shown positive results in T2DM patients. Significant reductions in HBA1C and lowering of fasting and post-prandial blood glucose levels were found, indicating improved long term glucose regulation (Parikh 2001). Improvements in lipid profiles were also shown with significant reduction in triglyceride levels, LDL-C and a lowering of TC (total cholesterol). HDL increased, and there was a significant decrease in apolipoprotein B (Parikh 2001).  Importantly there have been no significant side effects with spirulina. It is reportedly safe to take whilst pregnant.


FD garlic preserves the component of allicin, and when milled into fine powder allinase enzymeis activated and allicin is produced. As Louis Pasteur discovered, it provides potent antibacterial activity to be proven against a plethora of bacteria including Salmonella, Eschherichia coli (Adler et al 2002), Staphylococcus aureus (Cavallito 1944) and Helicobacter (O’Gara et al, 2000). It has been documented that garlic exerts a differential inhibition between beneficial intestinal microflora and potentially harmful enterobacteria (Rees et al 1993). 


Clinical investigations have produced attributable effects which include the reduction of risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, reduction of cancer risk, antioxidant effect and antimicrobial effect. It also enhances the detoxification of foreign compound and hepatoprotection (Colin-Gonzalez 2012, Aviello 2009). Allicin has proven positive anti-hypertensive effects. The mechanism involved its prostaglandin-like effect, which decreases peripheral vascular resistance (Rashid et al 1985). A small trial of 47 patients demonstrated a reduction in mean systolic blood pressure by 2 mmHg and the mean supine diastolic blood pressure by 9 mmHg versus placebo. Importantly garlic was free from side effects and no serious complication was reported (Auer 1990). 

Garlic contains the potent bioactive compounds allysulfides. These have anticancer properties.


  

In 1990 the US National Cancer Institute concluded that garlic may be the most potent food having cancer preventative properties, including anti-tumor effects, tumor cell growth inhibition and chemopreventive effects (Dahanukar et al 1997).

Long term application of garlic and its preparations on experimental atheroscelorsis induced by a high cholesterol diet showed a 50% reduction in atheromatous lesions, particularly in the aorta (Jaion 1977). A meta-analysis of 39 primary trials showed allicin is effective in reducing total cholesterol levels and LDL cholesterol levels. HDL only improved slightly but it was tolerable in all trials (Ried et al 2013).

Gingerol and shogaol have synergistic antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of more than one pharmacological action which may speed up the metabolism of fats and inhibit enzymes in carbohydrate metabolism (Majnik 2014).

Oxidative stress is associated with numerous diseases. Ginger is reported to decrease age-related oxidative stress markers (Topic et al 2002). Ginger may also exhibit anti-inflammatory effects through the modulation of calcium levels mediated through transient receptor potential vanilloid subtype 1, which is a heat and pain receptor that can interact with gingerol (Bode 2011).

Ginger efficacy has shown not to be dose related.

Camu-camu has high Vitamin C properties. In the 2008 Journal of Cardiology 70ml of juice has been shown to have independent anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties over and above the benefits of its Vitamin C (Inoue 2008).


Taken on a daily basis as a soup meal replacement may help to support discipline for correct diet and eating patterns. In conjunction with a low carbohydrate no refined sugar diet, weight loss will occur and reversal and prevention of T2DM in the broader population may be observed.
